I have previously written about Volkswagen insurance, electric and luxury car insurance, and many other articles. In each of them, AutoCasco was mentioned, so in this article, I will explain to you what this voluntary insurance is and how to choose it WELL.
What Exactly is AutoCasco?
AutoCasco (AC) is a voluntary vehicle insurance that provides financial protection to the vehicle owner in case of damage, destruction, or theft. Unlike mandatory liability insurance (OC), which protects against civil liability towards third parties, AC focuses on protecting the insured vehicle itself. Thanks to AutoCasco, the car owner can count on compensation in situations where the vehicle is damaged due to random events, accidents, acts of vandalism, and in case of theft. This insurance is particularly important for those who want to protect themselves from high repair costs or loss of vehicle value due to unforeseen events. The terms of protection and the scope of AutoCasco insurance are individually determined by the insurance company and specified in the General Terms and Conditions of Insurance (OWU).
What Does AC Insurance Cover?
AutoCasco (AC) insurance covers a wide range of events that can affect the damage or destruction of your vehicle. Primarily, AC protects against the effects of collisions and road accidents, regardless of whether they are caused by you or other road users. It also covers vehicle damage caused by third parties, such as acts of vandalism, and the theft of the entire vehicle or its parts. Additionally, AutoCasco can protect against the effects of natural forces, such as floods, fires, hailstorms, or lightning strikes. In some variants, the AC policy also covers damages resulting from attempted theft and damage caused by contact with animals. The scope of protection depends on the conditions specified in the insurance contract, so it is worth carefully reading the General Terms and Conditions of Insurance (OWU) before signing the policy.
Three simplest examples I prepared are:
- Vehicle Theft: If your car is stolen, the AutoCasco policy will cover its market value, allowing you to buy a new vehicle or compensate for the financial loss.
- Damage Caused by Natural Forces: In case your car is destroyed or damaged due to natural forces like hailstorms, floods, fires, or lightning strikes, AutoCasco will cover the repair costs or provide compensation.
- Accidents and Collisions: If your vehicle is damaged in a road accident, regardless of who is at fault, AC insurance will cover the repair costs, including parts replacement and labor, to restore the car to its pre-incident condition.
When Does AC Not Protect?
AutoCasco (AC) insurance does not cover all possible situations, even though it offers a wide range of protection. First of all, AC does not cover damages resulting from gross negligence or intentional actions of the vehicle owner. For example, if the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants, the insurer may refuse to pay compensation. Additionally, AC does not cover typical mechanical failures resulting from normal vehicle wear and tear, such as engine or brake system problems that are not caused by any sudden event. It is also important to note that this insurance does not cover damages caused by the vehicle's participation in illegal street races or other unauthorized motor events. Understanding these limitations is crucial to knowing when you can count on AC protection and when the financial responsibility falls on the vehicle owner.
What to Consider When Choosing AC Insurance?
When choosing AutoCasco (AC) insurance for your vehicle, it is worth paying attention to several key aspects to ensure the best protection and avoid unpleasant surprises in case of damage.
- Scope of Protection: Make sure the policy covers the most important risks, such as theft, destruction, collisions, and damages caused by natural forces. Also, check if the policy covers additional vehicle equipment if you have any.
- Contract Terms: Carefully analyze the General Terms and Conditions of Insurance (OWU) to understand the insurer's liability exclusions and the conditions that must be met to benefit from the protection. Pay attention to the deductible (your share of the damage) and the integral franchise, which can affect the compensation amount.
- Damage Settlement Method: Check what damage settlement methods the insurer offers. You can choose between cost estimation, workshop, and service (ASO) methods. The cost estimation method involves paying compensation based on a repair estimate, while the workshop and service methods include repairing the vehicle at a selected workshop, often with original parts.
- Parts Depreciation: Some insurers apply parts depreciation, which means the compensation amount may be reduced by the wear and tear of vehicle parts. It is worth checking if the policy includes such provisions and how they can affect the compensation amount.
- Additional Options: Consider whether it is worth purchasing additional insurance, such as assistance, which provides roadside assistance in case of vehicle breakdown, towing, tire replacement, or fuel delivery. These additional options can significantly enhance vehicle usage comfort and provide support in emergency situations.
- Price vs. Value of Protection: Although the insurance price is an important factor, it should not be the only criterion for choosing. Cheaper policies may offer limited protection or contain numerous exclusions. It is important to find a balance between cost and scope of protection to ensure that the insurance actually works when needed.
By analyzing these aspects, you will be able to choose an AutoCasco policy that best meets your needs and provides adequate protection for your vehicle.
Comprehensive Car Insurance - What Is It?
Comprehensive car insurance is one that provides extensive protection in various road and off-road situations. To create a complete insurance package, start with the mandatory civil liability insurance (OC), which covers damages caused to other road users. Then consider adding AutoCasco (AC) insurance, which protects your vehicle against theft, destruction, or damage due to accidents, vandalism, and natural forces. Another essential element is Assistance insurance, which provides roadside assistance, such as towing, on-site repairs, fuel delivery, or help with tire replacement. Assistance can also include organizing a replacement vehicle and covering accommodation costs if the incident occurs far from home.
Additionally, it is worth considering accident insurance (NNW), which provides compensation in case of health damage to the driver or passengers resulting from an accident. Glass and tire insurance are other options that protect against costs related to their damage. For complete protection, you can also add legal protection clauses that provide legal assistance in disputes related to vehicle use.
Exclusions, Clauses, Small Print - What to Watch Out for When Buying AC Online
Many times I have heard, "I will buy it cheaper online," and then someone came to me asking if anything could be done because they were denied compensation. Unfortunately, one of the features of online comparison tools is assigning and selecting various options on your own, which yes - lower the premium, but are not necessarily beneficial for the insured.
When buying AutoCasco (AC) insurance online, it is particularly important to pay attention to exclusions, clauses, and small print that can affect the scope and value of protection. One of the key elements is the deductible, which is your share of the damage. This is the amount you will have to cover out of your pocket in case of a claim. For example, if the deductible is 1000 PLN, and the damage is estimated at 5000 PLN, you will receive compensation reduced by this amount. There is also an integral franchise, which specifies the minimum damage value below which the insurer will not pay compensation. If the integral franchise is 500 PLN, damages of lower value will not be covered by AC.
It is also worth carefully reading the General Terms and Conditions of Insurance (OWU) and paying attention to all liability exclusions. Insurers often exclude damages resulting from gross negligence, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and damages caused during illegal races or using the vehicle contrary to its intended purpose.
Another important aspect is clauses regarding parts depreciation, which can reduce the compensation amount depending on the degree of wear and tear of vehicle parts. Some policies may also use replacement parts instead of original ones, which can affect the repair quality.
When buying AC online, it is also worth paying attention to damage settlement methods - cost estimation, workshop, or service. Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, which can affect the time and way of repairing the vehicle. Therefore, it is important to carefully read the contract terms and pay attention to these details to avoid unpleasant surprises when filing a claim.
